Why is DriveMutual the right choice for you?
DriveMutual is a telematics app that uses your smartphone’s GPS and motion sensors to assess driving behaviour. Safe driving behaviour can help policyholders save money on their Erie Mutual auto insurance renewal premiums.
You’ll earn a 10% ENROLLMENT DISCOUNT in your first term just for joining (you must sign up, register and actively use the app). We reward you for your safe driving behaviours, such as driving at a consistent safe speed and maintaining a safe following distance without hard braking. Upon renewal, a discount of up to 20% will be applied based on your driving record. The driving data collected will not be used to increase your premiums.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I sign up?
Contact your Erie Mutual Insurance Agent and tell them you’re interested in DriveMutual; they’ll get you started. Once your policy is confirmed in our system, you’ll receive a welcome email with a link to the app in the App Store (IOS) or on Google Play (Android). Download the app, register using your basic details, and create a password. The app will automatically link to your Erie Mutual Auto Insurance Policy.
Can I stop participating at any time?
You sure can. Policyholders can withdraw at any time by contacting their agent. Please note that your auto policy may no longer qualify for the discounts, including the Enrollment Discount, and you may notice an increase in your auto insurance premium as a result.
Can multiple vehicles and drivers be enrolled on the same policy?
Yes, for sure! Each driver’s discount from Drive Mutual is applied to the premiums of all the vehicles they are charged on under your Erie Mutual auto insurance policy.
What if I get a new phone?
Simply remove the app from your previous phone, then reinstall it on the new phone (you’ll need to download the app and enter your username and password to log in).
Do I need to turn on the app to record my driving trips?
The app will be left open in the background of your phone and will track trips automatically whenever you’re in motion. Ensure that your app permissions are enabled. You can view those settings required here.
How much do I need to drive to earn my discount?
The DriveMutual app will require you to record your driving trips for at least 3 months and at least 3,000 km to be eligible for the earned discount on renewal. If you have participated for less than 3 months, you will still receive your 10% Enrollment Discount will continue on your renewal.
How much of my phone battery will be used by DriveMutual?
Most users will not notice any significant difference in battery usage with the app installed and running in the background. Some older phone models, or weaker batteries, may notice some small amounts of battery consumption (you can choose to pause recording trips when your battery is low).
How much data will Drive Mutual use?
Data use should be very insignificant; most smartphone plans will see 30-50 MB per month (or approximately 3-5% of 1 GB). You can reduce the data usage by setting preferences to upload journeys over WIFI only, but this may delay viewing the results of your journeys.

Understanding Scoring & Discounts
You’ll need to specify for each trip recorded if you were the driver. After completing the trip, you will have 72 hours to specify if you were the Driver or a Passenger (after the 72 hours have expired, the app will automatically assign you as the driver). If you indicate you were not the Driver of a particular trip, it will not contribute to your score.
What if I forget to label a trip as a Passenger?
DriveMutual will take an average score across all drives taken throughout the year. Your consistent safe driving will determine your overall score.
What if I let a passenger use my phone while I’m driving?
This is not recommended. DriveMutual will track distracted driving behaviour since the phone screen may be on and your passenger interacting with the phone while a journey is being recorded (this will record as though the Driver is driving distracted).
Will using Bluetooth to answer my phone impact my score?
No, hands-free driving is permissible in Ontario, and Drive Mutual will not consider this activity. The app will only penalize for Distracted Driving if the physical movement of the phone is detected beyond the normal movement of the vehicle while the phone screen is on.
Understanding What Data is Collected
DriveMutual uses the following information from each trip a driver takes:
- GPS data (location)
- Distance travelled
- GPS and accelerometer data to determine driver speed (as well as changes in speed, acceleration, and braking)
- Time of day
- Phone screen status and phone interactions while moving at driving speeds
- Personal information provided when you sign up (such as name & email address) to link the app to your insurance policy
- Device information such a phone type and operating system
DriveMutual is intended to reward safe driving, not punish less-than-perfect drivers. The app focuses on the good, and we do not use the lower scores to surcharge other penalize drivers.
